Snark Street Art

I was farting around with photo booth again but decided to take it to another level this time. No zany effects, just me, some lip gloss, a lot of time, Lightroom, and the urge to make myself street art in Photoshop.

Taqwacores on Twitter

Hey all – a quick note about the taqwacores on Twitter wiki:

A while back, I asked around if there was a list of Taqs on Twitter for everyone to connect with each other.  Some were surprised there wasn’t already one (as was I) so when I got the thumbs up from The Kominas crew while they were on tour, I went ahead with creating what we Internet geeks call a beta version.

Here it is: Taqwacore on TwitterPacks. Yeah, it’s far from finished.

The whole wiki can be kind of confusing and I can update it for ya now that I got the hang of things – psst – only after I accidentally updating the front page of the entire site to a single link that went to the Taqwacore list, saying “OH SHIT,” and changing it back.

Oh wikis…

So, there is a way to update the wiki yourself, but you do have to sign-in. If that’s your style, let me know if you have any trouble. Otherwise, just send me a reply @kaitfoley so I know it’s cool to add you. There will be a new version sent out every #followfriday for people to pass along and retweet. If you don’t know what #followfriday is, no worries, it’s just a popular tag people use to make recommendations of new people to follow.

Last, I do hate the name TwitterPacks. After researching the other options, though, I decided to go with it… for now. Eventually, people in this group will be able to filter messages to see what conversations are going on about the book, bands, and other news-type like tours, blog updates, and recent press. That’s the vision I have for the group anyway.

Unfortunately, I gotta keep this quick for now because unemployment calls and there’s many job apps to be done today.

Sending peace, love, and many warm & fuzzy tweets your way,

Kait

Every soul’s got one of these

I started a slideshow on Flickr from random photos that I could use in a collage for a punk show with a band that uses lots of words to describe their music: Muslim, Pakistani, Bollywood are a couple. The slideshow turned into a project about identity but really, this was a last desperate attempt to be inspired. I did create a new collage for the Madison show on the 2009 Taqwa Tour.

Brand New Key by Melanie

This song could be on repeat all day and I wouldn’t mind. The video is a a 8mm film project I found on YouTube (via Alec).

Pros at Work

A little piece of lovely hip-hop:

I’ve spent the past week in NYC and Boston and there are so many updates that will come out in time, not to mention photos that I have yet to edit.

Hung out with The Kominas, realized Boston’s music scene is boss, and visited Harvard with Ms. Jillian York and others. There’s much to say but for now, enjoy the beats. This video is an intersection of my home (the midwest) and Boston’s scene. Meet the Rhymesayers family if you haven’t as well.

And to close my abbreviated post and speaking of home: I went to see the documentary New Muslim Cool and a Kominas performance before the show in Harlem. Again, photos to come but for now, the soundtrack has a great remix of their song “9000 miles” that is all about home and thinking about what it means.

Here’s a sample from blip:

It’s something to think on while I do the same. I’ve got a truckload of lyrics to push through, gladly. Thanks to the Kominas for sharing them.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a waste of space and annoys me to no end. In the time I’ve been on it, there has only has one incentive and that is to join. There’s no reason to stay or come back regularly. To be honest, it is not professionalism that turns me away but the fact interaction is uncomfortable. Stiff is not professional. Online you can’t just be a suit.

Find the Talk Radio Station; Turn it Up so it Bumps

I used to write out these lyrics, over and over:

Punk Music and Social Media

Earlier this year, I wrote a post about punk Islam to respond to “Islam, the Koran, and Lots of Questions” in The Los Angeles Times. Michael Muhammad Knight’s book about Muslim youth in an American punk music scene, The Taqwacores, and a band called The Kominas were mentioned in my post. Last week, I talked to Imran Malik, a Taqwacore and currently playing with The Kominas, for some answers.

Mrs. Toon = Badass Avatars

twitterMrs. Toon made mine for 13 bucks. The process goes like this: you send her a photo then seven days later she sends the new avatar back. You just upload it on her site. She’s also very nice, calls you pretty, and simply does divine avatars. There’s also a way to get one free on Twitter, but in the end, I decided it’s not a bad price. Artists gotta get paid, too.
